My name is Morusinyane “Lucky” Garenamotse. I was born into the Bayei tribe near Seronga Village, on the east side of the Okavango River panhandles in a small rural area in northern Botswana called Mokgacha. After 9 years of rural schooling and 2 years at a Junior College, I went to visit my uncle who lived in Maun, the gateway to the tourism destination area of Okavango Delta in Botswana. There I began my professional training in 1990 when Okavango Explorations hired me as a camp assistant and Mokoro (dug-out canoe) polar at Xugana Lodge. In 1991, I started my guide training, and a year later went to work at Bird Safaris as a tracker, boat driver and guide trainee. From 1994 to 2001, I worked at Game Trails as a bush camping assistant and guide. I participated in bush walking safaris in the Delta for 7 years, and then sat for and passed my guiding exams 1997.
Since then, I have guided professionally full-time except for the year I spent recovering in Nyangabwe Hospital in Francistown from a harrowing late-night attack by a 3.8 meter-long crocodile that dragged me from my tent and into the water. My survival story was widely reported in newspapers, radio and television. In 2001, I completed a series of advanced guide training courses with Okavango Wilderness Safaris, and went to work for Bush Ways Mobile Safaris. From 2004 to 2008, I was at Desert and Delta Safari as a lodge guide at Savuti Safari Lodge and Camp Moremi. In 2010 and 2011, I worked at (KDB) Ker Downey Botswana and in 2012 at Kwando Safaris.
I incorporated Gifts of the Kalahari in 2012. I’ve guided mobile camping safaris for the last 9 years, and acted as a lodge guide for the past 7 years. My professional certifications include:
1. Professional Guide License
2. Special Tourist License
3. First Aid Certificate
I can name almost every plant in the Okavango Delta and Kalahari Desert, and I can tell you what each is used for by the indigenous people of Botswana. I can identify almost any bird by sight as well as by sound. In fact, Birding Tours are my specialty.
